Dolomiti Hut to Hut

Dolomiti Hut to Hut

The northeastern Alps  stretch like a crown across the top of bella Italia.  The 18 peaks that form the eastern and most renowned range, called the Dolomiti, are spread over three different regions: Trentino, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto. The Dolomiti are deserving of their legendary descriptions: lacy spires of pink tinted rock, unique to this area. Two hundred million years ago this area was a sea, and the unusual formations are fossils left from the rich marine life, fossils that were jolted upwards thirty million years ago when the continents collided. This remarkable and truly unique geology was rewarded when the entire park was named a Unesco World Heritage Site, a patrimony to mankind, in 2009. Together we’ll cross the beautiful Dolomiti on foot, hut to hut and range to range, from chic Cortina to fairy tale Bressanone. Snowy peaks, green valleys sprinkled with wildflowers, silver ribbons of rivers, small reflecting lakes, spectacular vistas and turreted rock formations accompany us on challenging but rewarding hikes that will forever remain impressed in your heart and mind.

Tour Overview

Day 1-2

We meet in Cortina and hike right out of our hotel for two days of beautiful full day hikes past forests, valleys, and alpine lakes. Our first walk will take us through forests and valleys to the crashing waterfalls of the Fanes River. We continue until we reach the Lago di Limo, the source of the Fanes River. Our eight hour hike finishes right at the Rifugio Lavarella, 2,042 meters in height, our home for the next two nights. The following day we have a 7 hour loop walk in the Natural Park of Sennes/Braies , visiting several rifugi.

Day 3-5

Two marvelous days of hiking in the Val Badia visiting small towns, farms and with spectacular views. We’ll circle around the dramatic Sasso della Croce before reaching the Rifugio Santa Croce. After lunch here, we’ll visit the small settlement with its pretty Renaissance abbey. We’ll walk down to the lovely small ski resort of San Cassiano where we are staying for the next two nights. The next day’s walk takes us “ mountain town hopping” all the way up to Rifugio Valparola (2,300 meters).

Day 6-9

This morning we leave the charming town of San Cassiano and head out for our hike that will take us to our home for the night; Rifugio Gardenaccia. The following morning we set off for a nice invigorating hike that takes us all the way to the Val Gardena where we will spend the next two nights. The following day we’ll have a beautiful hike in the Val Gardena with views of the Sasso Lungo, one of the most impressive massifs in the area.
