Puglia, the “heel of the boot” of Italy, is bordered by two seas. The port towns strung along the coast in the middle of the Mediterranean are as bustling as when the Greeks and Romans coveted them, and then a thousand years and more later, when the Crusades marched through town.  Ignored for years by tourists, and snubbed by the Italians, only now are its artistic, architectural and geographical treasures being appreciated. One of the largest producers of wine and table grapes in Italy, there are delicious wines and creamy cheeses to be discovered, as well as a relaxed southern feeling unique to this area.

Tour Overview

Day 1-5

We spend two nights in golden Baroque Lecce: visit the town and then spend a day hiking on the western coast, with a visit to the fish market at Gallipoli. The following three nights are in the charming coastal port of Otranto where we have wonderful seaside walks along the eastern coastline and fascinating cultural visits to the town and hidden archeological sites nearby.

Day 6-7

One last hike along the Adriatic coast as we transfer north to the UNESCO site of Alberbello, with unique whitewashed  cone shaped houses known as “trulli”. Our two nights in town have a fairy tale feel to them as we walk picuresque country roads and climb the spiral shaped town of Locorotondo.

Day 8-10

Our last two nights are spent in the dramatic town of Matera: a rocky plateau where homes and churches have been carved right into the rock, and inhabited constantly for centuries. The spectacular landscape has been used in dozens of films. We’ll visit the town and surroundings, and have a great hike in the lacy Dolomiti Lucane. Drop off in Bari.
