Tour Overview
Day 1-3
We meet in Palermo for a guided tour of the city and the hilltop cathedral of Monreale. The next day we head west, have a hike to the Greek temple of Segesta and then hike more along the magnificent seacoast. We continue on to Marsala for two nights from where we visit colorful salt flats, the Phoenician island of Mozia, and the winding stone streets of Erice.
Day 4-5
As we drive east we’ll stop to visit the famous Greek “Valley of the Temples” in Agrigento,(Doric temples dating to 500 BC!) and weather permitting, enjoy a picnic in the ancient gardens of Kolymbetra before continuing on to the quiet baroque town of Ragusa Ibla for two nights. From here we’ll also visit Modica and taste their famous chocolate.
Day 6-7
Two wonderful nights in the little port of Ortigia, connected to Siracusa. We’ll visit the interesting town, the vibrant market, the Greek archeological area, and hike in the national park of Vendicari.
Day 8-10
Our last two nights are in the elegant town of Taormina. As we travel north we’ll hike through the huge ancient necropolis of Pantalica, which dates to 1000 BC. We’ll visit the town and archeological site, and have a wonderful full day hike on the volcanic slopes and lava hills of majestic, and very alive, Mt. Etna. Drop off at airport in Catania.
